Poker has been around for centuries in various forms. Historians that focus on games of chance hotly debate the true origins of poker, however. Some believe it originates from the games of Poque, Poca, or Pochen. These are of French, Irish, and German derivation respectively.

The most interesting thing isn’t its origins, however. The most intriguing aspect of the game comes to light when you actually play poker. A Poker Game incorporates many aspects from these earlier games. These aspects involve the use of a variety of cards, betting styles, and the ever popular bluff.

There are several popular varieties of poker gaming available in the world today. The most often played among them are straight, stud, draw, and community style games.

Straight Poker is the oldest and least often played now. This simplistic variant is based off of an older card game called Primero. In this style of play everyone is given three to five cards, depending on how you play, and each player bets in a single round. The entire hand is complete in one round and there is no drawing of cards. You are permitted to raise or re-raise a bet.

Stud is similar to the straight version except that here we begin to see rudimentary Poker Strategy and tactics come into play. The major difference comes in at the dealing and betting phases. Each card is handed out one at a time, with bets being placed in each round. Depending on the number of cards in the game, generally five or seven, the first three are usually handed out face down. Once the face up cards are dealt each player tries to create the best hand available with what they have and change their bets accordingly.

Draw Poker is a fairly popular variety currently. In the truest method each player is dealt five cards face down and each makes a bet. After the betting round is complete they are allowed to discard a few cards in an attempt at drawing new ones. This is done in the hopes that they will acquire a better hand. Some versions allow further betting after this, others do not.

Due to television one of the most popular gaming styles today is Community Poker. The best known variants are Texas Hold-em and Omaha. When playing this version the rules are similar to Stud Poker. A set of cards are dealt face down to each player, then a set of community cards are dealt in the center. Betting is based on how strong they think their hand is.

One other Poker Game variant almost everyone knows about is Strip Poker. This can be played in the manner of any standard Poker Game. The only difference is that the bets are done with clothing. This method of play has become very popular at parties.
